Reading to children is crucial and beneficial as it supports children’s development and create transformative experiences for them. When we read to children, we are nurturing children’s curiosity, fostering creativity and imagination, promoting language and literacy development, cultivating a love for reading, encouraging lifelong learners, and supporting them to make connections to the world around them.

Reading should be an enjoyable experience for children. It is a way for children to see and hear themselves and make sense of the world around them. As we read to children, we are stimulating their brains, expanding their vocabulary, and moving them towards success in school and life. How we read to children makes a difference!

Here are some tips to consider when reading to and with children:

You can say things like, “I wonder why…” or “She must feel… because… • Ask Open-Ended Questions At the end of the story, ask a “how” or “why” question to encourage children to discuss key events and characters’ thoughts and feelings related to those events (source: Rollins Center for Language and Literacy)
