Early Brain Development – Infant Care
Most parents recognize the importance of early brain development for their young infant care which includes nutrition, sleep, and a stimulating environment to allow positive cognitive and physical growth. Yet some of the most important early brain development occurs prior to birth, and is impacted by a number of prenatal factors. This blog will take a closer look at some of the most important prenatal brain development milestones.
Week 3
Even though the developing fetus is still considered an embryo at this stage, important organs and skeletal structures are already forming. These include the cardiovascular system, the spine, and most importantly, the brain.
Week 4 – 10
By now the fetus has already developed three different brain sections. These include the middle brain, forebrain, and hindbrain. The hindbrain advances the most quickly during this time since it controls vital functions such as the fetal heartbeat, muscle control, and breathing. By the tenth week, the fetus is forming more than 100,000 neurons per minute. The last part of the brain to develop is the frontal lobe.
Week 11 – 25
By now the fetal spinal column has clearly formed and the nerves are starting to extend outward. At this stage various sensory stimuli can be felt. At week 25, the brain will begin to regulate all bodily functions while initiating both auditory and visual systems.
Week 26 – 40
The fetal brain will begin to form folds. Brainwaves are also becoming stronger, which further enhances sensory stimuli. The brain is now completely in control of breathing and body temperature. The final trimester allows the brain to continue to develop more folds. The brain is now establishing innumerable connections between nerve cells. The brain and lungs are the last organs to fully develop prior to birth.
